Tragedy Strikes Everest Rescue: Two Helicopters Collide, Claiming One Life

A catastrophic mid-air collision between two helicopters near Mount Everest has resulted in the death of an Indian tourist and injured at least one other foreign national and a pilot. The incident occurred Tuesday morning in the Pheriche area, a critical staging point below Everest Base Camp, as the aircraft, belonging to Air Dynasty and Fishtail Air, attempted to land. The Fishtail Air helicopter was engaged in a rescue operation, transporting passengers from the Everest region, while the Air Dynasty helicopter was carrying cargo. The deceased has been identified as Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu, 47, from Chennai, India, with New Zealand national Shailesh Kisan Patel among the injured, who were subsequently transported to a hospital in Kathmandu. This tragic event underscores the vital yet perilous role helicopters play in Nepal’s mountainous terrain, serving as the sole means of transport for evacuations and supplies in the absence of roads, especially given the region’s challenging high-altitude and cold conditions. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has launched a full investigation into the crash, which occurred shortly after improved weather conditions had allowed trekking routes to reopen following heavy snowfall.
