A 1,000-year-old gold pendant, potentially symbolizing the ‘Hand of God,’ has been discovered by metal detectorist Nick Berry on farmland near Highclere Castle in England. The gleaming, hand-shaped artifact, believed to date from the ninth or 10th century, was found in near-pristine condition and experts suggest it likely belonged to a high-status individual, possibly worn as a protective talisman. The discovery, made during a routine treasure hunt, has been declared treasure by the British Museum, and Berry, along with the landowner, could receive a significant payment if it’s acquired by a public institution. The pendant’s design echoes Christian symbolism found on late Saxon and Viking-era coins and artwork, leading to its interpretation as the ‘Hand of God.’ This remarkable find adds to a growing list of significant archaeological discoveries made by metal detectorists across Britain.
