A disturbing new survey from the Buckley Institute reveals that a staggering 45% of undergraduate students believe physical violence can be justified to silence speech they deem hateful, a finding that has prompted one university president to declare that higher education has “lost its way” and is fostering “violent entitlement.” The survey further indicates that this sentiment is not confined to a fringe minority, with 54% of liberal students, 36% of moderates, and 30% of conservatives holding this view. Beyond the justification of violence, the study exposes a broader rejection of free speech principles, as 46% of students support censorship through shout-downs and 40% believe offensive speech should be criminalized. Compounding these concerns, 42% of students expressed a preference for socialism over capitalism, and a shocking 22% believe the U.S. deserved the September 11th terrorist attacks. Dr. Gerson Moreno-RiaƱo, President of Cornerstone University, attributes these alarming trends not to free speech debates but to a profound failure in moral formation within universities, arguing that institutions are actively teaching resentment, grievance politics, and a sense of entitlement that leads to a readiness for violent action. He warns that this moral bankruptcy, coupled with an anti-historical bent and the embrace of ideologies like communism and socialism, is creating graduates with sharp minds but no moral compass, posing a significant threat to democracy and leading employers to question the value of college degrees and consider alternatives like direct high school training.
