Hochul Widens Gubernatorial Lead to Double Digits as Blakeman Faces ‘Running Out of Time’

In a significant shift as the election nears, Governor Kathy Hochul has expanded her lead over Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman to a commanding 14 points, 54% to 40%, according to a new Siena Research Institute poll. This widened gap, up from a 9-point lead in September, indicates that Blakeman is ‘quickly running out of time to close a gap that is growing rather than narrowing,’ as noted by pollster Steven Greenberg. The poll reveals Blakeman is struggling to gain traction in crucial upstate and downstate suburban regions where Republicans typically need strong support, with candidates running virtually even in these areas. Furthermore, Hochul holds an 11-point lead among independent voters, a demographic essential for statewide Republican success. Despite Hochul’s growing advantage, a plurality of voters (35%) believe neither candidate will improve affordability, though 30% favor Hochul on this issue compared to 27% for Blakeman. Hochul also achieved a personal milestone, with her favorable rating reaching 51%, the first time a majority has viewed her positively in Siena polling during her tenure. Her job approval also rose to 51%. The survey highlights a substantial gender gap, with Hochul leading Blakeman by 23 points among women and six points among men, alongside strong support from Black voters (81%). A decisive 68% of likely voters predict a Hochul victory, with even 40% of Republicans expecting her to win.
