Americans planning to visit Italy, a top European vacation destination, are being urged by the State Department to exercise increased caution due to the persistent threat of terrorism, underscored by multiple arrests related to extremist activities in recent months. While Italy continues to attract millions with its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and vibrant culture, the State Department’s updated Level 2 travel advisory highlights the risk of terrorist violence. This warning comes despite terrorism in Italy often receiving less international attention than in other European regions. Recent events, however, demonstrate a clear and present danger, including the August arrest of a 16-year-old in northern Italy for spreading pro-ISIS propaganda online and a June incident near Bologna where another teenager was apprehended with jihadist materials and weapons manuals. Beyond terrorism, the advisory also strongly cautions travelers about prevalent petty crime, particularly in bustling tourist areas and on public transport, warning of opportunistic crimes like purse snatching, pickpocketing, and car break-ins. Travelers are advised to remain acutely aware of their surroundings, monitor local news, stay alert in crowded tourist spots, and be prepared to alter their plans if necessary, echoing similar recent advisories issued for other popular destinations like Peru and Brazil which warned of crime, civil unrest, kidnapping, and other serious threats.
