Zelenskyy’s Moscow Ties: A Path to Peace?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s former spokesperson, Iuliia Mendel, has controversially suggested that Zelenskyy should leverage his past connections and professional growth in Moscow, where he built his comedy career and earned his initial millions, to negotiate a peace deal directly with Vladimir Putin. Mendel argued that Zelenskyy ‘knows a lot of people from Putin’s elite’ and that his extensive experience performing and working in Russia, even producing films there after the 2014 annexation of Crimea, provides him with unique leverage that he is currently not utilizing. She criticized Zelenskyy for ‘pretending that he has nothing in common with them’ and urged him to ‘go to Moscow and needs to agree on compromises that are acceptable,’ rather than engaging in ‘maximalist games’ or acting as a ‘noble actor.’ This perspective comes as technical peace talks are underway, with hopes for direct leader-to-leader discussions, and contrasts sharply with Zelenskyy’s past rejection of Putin’s invitation to Moscow, where he famously stated he would only visit ‘on a missile.’ Mendel believes personal animosity between the leaders has become a diplomatic deadlock, and she praised efforts by figures like Melania Trump, who recently helped broker a temporary ceasefire for humanitarian aid in Oleshky, as examples of how a ‘strong third party’ and a focus on ‘human lives, not on maps and territories’ could be more effective than confrontational diplomacy, which she attributes to Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.
