Despite a viral attack that sent a grandfather flying through the air and resulted in multiple broken bones requiring surgery, Yellowstone National Park officials have confirmed that the bull bison involved will not be euthanized and will remain within the park. The shocking incident, captured on video, showed the massive animal charging Carl Isom-McDaniel, tossing him an estimated eight feet before standing over him. Wildlife photographer Mike MacLeod, who witnessed the event and intervened to help haze the bison away, stated that neither the grandfather nor his grandson appeared to provoke the animal, noting that the bull had already charged a group of teenagers before encountering the pair. While the grandfather is recovering, his primary concern after the attack was his grandson’s well-being, who thankfully escaped unharmed. This decision underscores the park’s policy of not taking management action against wild animals unless absolutely necessary, even after severe encounters, reminding visitors to maintain a safe distance of at least 25 yards from bison, which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and charge at speeds of 30 mph, especially during mating season.
