The White House is forcefully condemning the actions of a Bahamian national, Anthony Tyrone Higgs, who, after illegally voting in the 2020 election, has been apprehended and faces deportation. Higgs, who arrived in the U.S. in 1976 and held a Green Card, amassed a lengthy and violent criminal record including armed robbery, domestic violence, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, grand larceny, and weapon possession during a violent crime. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) confirmed Higgs illegally voted in the 2020 election, sparking his arrest in Decatur, Georgia, and placement into ICE custody for removal. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis stated, “This alien was a guest in our country who forfeited his right to be in the U.S. when he committed these violent crimes and voted in the 2020 election. Any non-citizens who vote illegally in our elections will be arrested and removed. American elections are only for Americans.” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized that Higgs’ illegal vote, coupled with his extensive criminal history, makes him a threat to election integrity, adding that “just one noncitizen casting a ballot is enough to cancel out an American citizen’s vote.” This case is part of a larger crackdown on election integrity-related crimes, with DHS highlighting other recent arrests of non-citizens for illegal voting and related offenses, including a Colombian national sentenced for identity theft to vote illegally for over 20 years, a Slovakian national who voted in the 2022 midterms, an Australian national accused of voting in both 2022 and 2024, and a Mauritanian national charged with voter fraud after allegedly voting multiple times since 2008 despite an existing removal order.
