Ayanle, 61, is alleged by a historian to have been his father’s ‘right-hand man’ with significant government power, while his sister, Deka Mohamed Siad, and her late husband reportedly operated a healthcare company that received over $1.8 million in Medicare funding, though the company appears to have operated legitimately. This revelation follows the recent deportation of another Barre-era figure, former military commander Yusuf Abdi Ali, who was found to have personally engaged in torture and ordered soldiers to detain and torture civilians before being sent back to Somalia. Survivors of the Siad Barre regime are now calling for U.S. authorities to investigate Ayanle and other family members to determine their knowledge of or involvement in the atrocities committed during the dictatorship, echoing ICE’s stance that the United States will not be a safe haven for human rights violators.
