A shocking incident at a Chili’s in Forest City, North Carolina, left multiple customers and employees suffering chemical burns after a dangerous mix-up involving an industrial degreaser that was mistakenly used in margaritas. The devastating error occurred when a contracted worker delivered an industrial degreaser, which an employee then stored in an unmarked container. Two days later, another employee, unaware of the toxic contents, mistook the chemical for sugar or salt and used it to prepare the margarita station. Shortly after the restaurant opened, three customers consumed the contaminated drinks and immediately experienced severe discomfort and chemical burns around their mouths. Two employees also tasted the substance and reported similar painful reactions. The Foothills Health District launched an investigation, leading to the temporary suspension of the restaurant’s food service permit, though it was quickly reinstated after safety standards were re-evaluated. Health officials are using this alarming event to reinforce critical food safety regulations regarding the proper labeling and storage of chemicals to prevent future public health crises.
