A fifth-grade field trip to Lake Macbride State Park ended in unimaginable tragedy with the drowning deaths of a dedicated teacher and a young student. Hannah Jorgensen, 24, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, and her 10-year-old student, Ahmed Osman, were tragically lost on Tuesday afternoon during a ‘School of the Wild’ excursion. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call at the park and, after an extensive search that spanned into Wednesday, recovered both victims from the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway. The Iowa City Community School District is devastated, calling Jorgensen and Osman ‘deeply valued members’ of their community and offering extensive counseling services to grieving students, staff, and families. The incident, which involved multiple assisting agencies, remains under investigation as the community grapples with this profound loss.
