Both families have approved the release of their sons’ names and are seeking privacy during their profound grief. Strang, a prominent member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, was discovered at an off-campus residence, while Hamilton was found in Stewart Hall, a campus dormitory. Foul play has not been ruled out by authorities, and the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that the county’s narcotics task force is investigating both deaths, though a connection between the incidents remains unclear. Adding a disturbing layer to the investigation, packages of kratom, a substance sometimes referred to as ‘gas station heroin,’ were recovered at both scenes. This development comes as campus leaders had previously warned students about cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid that may not be detected by standard drug tests and can require multiple doses of Narcan for treatment. Governor Tate Reeves has stated that state investigators are assisting local authorities to expedite toxicology reports, as students are being urged to avoid all drugs amidst growing fear and a crackdown on campus social activities.
