Pope Leo XIV’s Cancer Surgery Recovery: Blood Tests and X-ray Confirm Normal Postoperative Progress

Following surgery to remove a small nodule of lung cancer, Pope Leo XIV underwent scheduled blood tests and a chest X-ray, with the Vatican announcing his recovery is progressing normally and as expected. The 71-year-old pontiff had thoracic surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung on Tuesday after doctors confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer, through a tissue examination during the operation. The Holy See Press Office released a statement attributing to Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora that the postoperative recovery is proceeding well, with values within the expected range for the procedure. The Pope has reportedly begun respiratory physiotherapy, has started walking around his room, and has resumed eating normally, indicating a smooth convalescence after the successful 90-minute surgery which had no reported complications. This development follows the Pope’s own announcement earlier in the week that a small, early-stage lung lump had been identified and that he had decided to undergo surgery based on medical advice.
