Authorities have arrested Alexandros Paporakis, a 19-year-old identified as a transgender neo-Nazi, for allegedly plotting a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois; the attack was thwarted thanks to a tip from a coworker. Prosecutors claim Paporakis drove to the temple armed with a modified rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and body armor, intending to carry out the massacre, but returned home after the rifle malfunctioned. Following the malfunction, Paporakis allegedly searched online for ways to unjam the weapon and then contacted a colleague, revealing his intent to commit mass murder. This communication prompted Paporakis’s coworkers at Taco Bell to report the suspicious message to Mount Prospect Police, leading to a swift investigation, a search warrant, and the suspect’s detention before he could return to the temple. During the execution of the search warrant at Paporakis’s residence, police discovered a rifle, a loaded magazine, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, tactical gear, and an eight-page manifesto. This manifesto reportedly detailed the planned attack and expressed Paporakis’s white supremacist views, with writings exhibiting hatred towards Indian people, Jewish people, African-Americans, and ‘non-white’ individuals, whom Paporakis described as ‘subhumans’ he intended to kill. The suspect allegedly referred to himself as a ‘sociopathic white supremacist Neo-Nazi filled with hatred’ and fantasized about mass murder daily, even titling the manifesto ‘the Aurora Shooter.’ A judge has ordered Paporakis held without bond, but crucially, has also mandated that he continue receiving hormone injections for his gender transition, along with treatment for ADHD, depression, and anxiety while incarcerated. The Hindu temple has acknowledged the threat and has since increased its security measures, including a greater armed security presence, to ensure the safety of its devotees, employees, and volunteers.
