A New York City police officer, Joshua Acosta, 39, arrested on serious charges including rape and sexual acts against a child, has a history of admitted on-the-job misconduct, according to documents from the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office. Acosta previously admitted to violating department rules, including engaging in a dangerous high-speed chase in 2019 where he exceeded 56 mph without proper justification and failed to activate his body camera during the pursuit and subsequent traffic stop, resulting in a forfeiture of 15 vacation days. Further records reveal other substantiated allegations from 2019, including abuse involving verbal or physical threats of force, unlawful entry, and an unauthorized search of a residence while pursuing a suspect, for which he received command discipline and was later assigned training on lawful searches. Despite these prior admissions of misconduct and disciplinary actions, Acosta now faces an 11-count criminal complaint alleging numerous sex acts against a minor between September 2021 and June 2026, while his defense attorneys maintain the current allegations are false and irrelevant to his past disciplinary record.
