New York City is significantly increasing security measures as it braces for the Jewish High Holy Days and the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch highlighting a surge in antisemitic hate crimes. Despite no specific, credible threats, Mamdani urged the public to avoid lower Manhattan on Friday due to street closures for the 9/11 commemoration attended by Vice President JD Vance. “Your safety during these sacred days is of the utmost importance to our administration,” Mamdani stated, assuring an enhanced NYPD presence at synagogues and Jewish locations citywide. Commissioner Tisch revealed that confirmed hate crimes are up 16% this year, with antisemitic incidents rising 9%, and alarmingly, over half of all hate crimes target Jewish New Yorkers, who constitute only about 10% of the city’s population. She cited recent incidents, including the screwdriver attack on Moshe Grunhaus outside a Manhattan synagogue, and disclosed that the NYPD’s intelligence division has disrupted multiple plots against Jewish institutions since October 7th, including alleged plans targeting a Manhattan synagogue and a Brooklyn Jewish center. Tisch reassured Jewish New Yorkers of the NYPD’s commitment to their safety, emphasizing vigilance even in the absence of direct threats.
