AI-Powered Jon Bon Jovi Impersonator Scams Woman Out of $10K, Nearly Losing Her Home

Leslie Pickett, a devoted fan, was duped for months by a sophisticated scammer who posed as rock legend Jon Bon Jovi, leveraging AI-generated videos and convincing personal interactions to defraud her of over $10,000 and push her to the brink of losing her home. The deception began when Pickett, introduced to Instagram by her daughter, interacted with what she believed was Bon Jovi’s verified account, only to be drawn into a conversation with an unverified impostor who promised a more personal connection with the star. This digital charade, which included personalized messages, seemingly authentic videos, and even alleged divorce proceedings from Bon Jovi’s wife, lasted for seven months before the scammer began soliciting funds for exclusive meet-and-greets and other fabricated events, utilizing various payment methods including cryptocurrency. The AI’s ability to generate videos where the impostor would say Pickett’s name and even perform specific actions, like pulling his ear, made the illusion nearly impenetrable, shattering Pickett’s trust when she realized the money was gone and the man she believed she knew was a fabricated persona, a stark illustration of the escalating dangers of romance scams amplified by advanced artificial intelligence, as highlighted in the National Geographic documentary special ‘Super Scam Me.’
