Nevada Governor Name-Drops to Avoid Traffic Ticket in Bodycam Footage

Newly released bodycam video captures a startlingly brief traffic stop where Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, when pulled over for an alleged red-light violation, identified himself and was then allowed to drive away without a citation. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sergeant initiated the stop after observing Lombardo’s pickup truck make a right turn at a red light without appearing to come to a complete stop. Before the officer could fully explain the reason for the stop, Governor Lombardo interjected, stating, “I’m Joe Lombardo.” The sergeant acknowledged his identity, but before he could finish detailing the violation, Lombardo responded with “C’mon, man.” Within approximately 15 seconds, the sergeant concluded the stop, stating, “You’re good to go, sir. Appreciate you. Have a good day.” Lombardo’s office later claimed he was on his way to the airport with his wife and that he provided his name as a courtesy, disputing any suggestion of seeking preferential treatment. However, Nevada Democrats have voiced outrage, with the State Party Chair questioning if Lombardo believes he is above the law, especially given his past role as a law enforcement officer. Conversely, the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, which had previously endorsed Lombardo, defended the officer’s actions, characterizing the stop as routine and emphasizing that officers frequently use discretion in minor traffic infractions, suggesting that the outcome would have been the same even if the driver were not the governor.
