A 70-year-old hiker, Craig Berg, has been miraculously rescued after vanishing for a full week in the rugged and remote Isle Royale National Park. Found alive and alert but suffering from hypothermia, Berg’s discovery on Saturday was the culmination of an extensive, multi-agency search effort involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Michigan State Police, National Park Service, and numerous other specialized units. A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City successfully hoisted Berg from the wilderness before he was transported for immediate medical evaluation. His survival after being missing since September 5th in the isolated island park, known for its limited infrastructure and unreliable cell service, is a testament to the dedicated search teams and the crucial spotting by fellow backpackers who alerted authorities. Berg, who had embarked on an extended solo hike, was located by Michigan State Police foot patrols and K-9 units, bringing an end to a tense week of uncertainty for his family and the search crews.
