US, Allies Condemn Turkey-Libya Maritime Deal as ‘Provocative’ and Illegal

The United States has joined a chorus of international condemnation, labeling the maritime agreement between Turkey and Libya as “unhelpful and provocative” and a violation of international law. The State Department reiterated its stance, urging all parties, including NATO allies Greece and Turkey, to resolve maritime disputes through good-faith negotiations rather than actions that escalate regional tensions. This deal, ratified by the Eastern Libyan parliament and recognized by Turkey as entirely legitimate and legally sound, has ignited fury among European nations and Israel, who argue it redraws established sea borders in the strategically vital Eastern Mediterranean, a region rich with potential gas deposits. Greece, in particular, has declared the memorandum will have no legal effect, asserting it infringes on their maritime rights and Crete’s zones, a critical NATO base. The European Union has also firmly stated the agreement is “null and void” and incompatible with the Law of the Sea, accusing Turkey of seeking to destabilize the region and advance its own interests, potentially pushing the U.S. out and challenging the pro-Western order, which Hellenic American Leadership Council Executive Director Endy Zemenides warns endangers U.S. and allied security by impacting American companies like Exxon and Chevron operating in the area.
