Judge Backs Down on Demand for DOJ Attorney Signatures After Trump Calls Her ‘Lunatic’

In a dramatic turn during a nearly seven-hour hearing, Biden-appointed Judge Ana Reyes abruptly withdrew her demand that Justice Department attorneys personally sign a court filing related to the controversial removal of hundreds of trees at a federally owned D.C. golf course. Reyes had initially invoked Rule 11, requiring attorneys to vouch for the factual basis of their filings and potentially face sanctions, after President Donald Trump, on Truth Social, labeled her a “crazed lunatic” and questioned the integrity of sealed court audio recordings. This about-face comes amid a heated legal battle over Trump’s ambitious plans to renovate the East Potomac Golf Links, which saw the National Park Service remove approximately 430 trees, prompting Reyes to issue a temporary restraining order. The dispute escalated when Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward Jr. sought Reyes’ removal, citing bias and “open hostility.” Trump’s public commentary, including tweets detailing renovation plans and a November 15 start date, directly contradicted previous court filings, leading Reyes to demand explicit attorney accountability. Despite initial resistance from Woodward and DOJ attorneys, who argued against the “appropriate request,” and Reyes’ insistence, she ultimately conceded, stating, “we’ve all got better things to spend our time on,” effectively ending the standoff over attorney signatures.
