Former UK Cheerleader Sentenced to 10 Years for Infant’s Death by Asphyxiation

A former University of Kentucky cheerleader, Laken Snelling, has been sentenced to a decade in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the death of her newborn son. The infant was found deceased in a closet, wrapped in a trash bag, after Snelling’s roommates reported hearing disturbances and alerted authorities. Medical examiners determined the baby, born alive, died from asphyxiation, with Snelling admitting to investigators that she “deprived him of oxygen.” Facing emotional distress and an unexpected pregnancy, Snelling confessed to ending her infant’s life shortly after birth, then concealing the act by cleaning up and hiding the body. Her guilty plea also encompassed charges of abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant, stemming from her actions, which included deleting evidence of her pregnancy from her phone.
