GOP Rival Accuses Minnesota Lt. Governor of Billions in Fraud Blame-Shifting

In a fiery debate exchange, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michele Tafoya aggressively challenged Democratic Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan over the staggering $9 billion in fraud that has rocked Minnesota, directly confronting Flanagan with the accusation that she has evaded responsibility for the massive financial scandal. Tafoya pressed Flanagan on her eight-year tenure as second-in-command, highlighting a record of declining test scores, rising crime, and a budget surplus that has become a deficit, arguing that taxpayers deserve better than a leadership that oversaw historic fraud. When directly asked about her accountability, Flanagan deflected, stating, “The governor has been very clear that the buck stops with him,” and emphasizing her own work on initiatives like paid family leave and child tax credits, while attempting to pivot the discussion to former President Donald Trump. Tafoya sharply rebuked this deflection, asserting that Trump was not on the ballot and that Flanagan, as second in command, “demanded to be in the room where everything happened” and therefore cannot claim ignorance to the billions that “walked out the door to fraud.” Flanagan, who announced her Senate bid after Governor Tim Walz faced political scrutiny for the fraud, doubled down on criticizing Trump’s endorsement of Tafoya, while Tafoya outlined her own proposals for combating fraud, including mandatory prison minimums for domestic fraudsters and deporting noncitizens who commit fraud.
