Sean Kirkpatrick, the former director of the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), has cast doubt on a recently declassified report detailing an FBI personnel’s sighting of a mysterious black triangular object, stating that the account, like many others, lacks the crucial evidence needed to substantiate claims of extraterrestrial or even advanced adversarial technology. Kirkpatrick emphasized the importance of an evidence-based approach to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) reports, cautioning against the ‘authority bias’ that can arise from assuming witness credibility alone validates a sighting. He noted that the FBI report, which described a silent, non-reflective triangular craft with no visible propulsion ascending rapidly and disappearing, is particularly challenging to analyze due to the absence of any photographic or sensor data, with the accompanying images being illustrations. Kirkpatrick reiterated AARO’s framework for evaluating UAP, categorizing possibilities into advanced foreign technology, misidentified ordinary objects or sensor effects, and extraterrestrial origins, but stressed that without concrete data, definitive conclusions, especially those leaning towards extreme beliefs, are premature. He revealed that many cases publicly labeled ‘unresolved’ were, in fact, resolved by AARO but were released without their resolutions by Pentagon leadership who encouraged the public to form their own conclusions, a move Kirkpatrick decried as fueling conspiracy theories. He differentiated between ‘unidentified’ and ‘unresolved,’ clarifying that the latter often signifies insufficient data for analysis, not necessarily an inexplicable phenomenon, and asserted that no data reviewed by AARO supported an alien hypothesis, with most cases being mundane explanations or referred to national security for potential foreign adversary involvement. Kirkpatrick concluded that the latest batch of declassified files offers no new information to alter his assessment, reinforcing his long-held view that while the existence of extraterrestrial life is statistically probable, evidence of their visitation to Earth remains highly improbable.
