DOJ Political Cash Flow Unchanged by Trump Makeover, Democrats Still Dominating Donations

Despite the Trump administration’s stated goal of eliminating political bias within the Justice Department and efforts to recruit ideologically aligned lawyers, federal campaign finance records reveal a persistent and widening gap in political donations, with an overwhelming majority of contributions from individuals identifying as DOJ employees continuing to flow to Democratic-aligned committees. An analysis of approximately $300,000 in political contributions between January 2025 and August 2026 found that just over 75% of donations from those listing their employer as “Department of Justice” or a variation thereof went to Democratic committees, a trend that has become more pronounced during the administration, increasing from about 70% in 2025 to nearly 90% in 2026. This partisan slant persists even as over 10,000 attorneys have left federal service since Trump took office for a second term, with many former federal lawyers joining legal actions against the administration or moving to Democratic-run state attorney general offices. While the administration has publicly encouraged lawyers who “support President Trump” to join the DOJ and attempted to push out those not aligned with its agenda, the financial data indicates that the political leanings of DOJ employees, as reflected in their donations, remain overwhelmingly Democratic, with notable recipients including figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Emily’s List, alongside some contributions to Trump-aligned PACs.
