A grandfather, who had recently buried his son serving in the Air Force, was tragically gunned down in a seemingly random act of road rage in Bridgeport, Connecticut, just days after the funeral. Police have arrested Jorge “George” Ortiz, 57, a convicted murderer with a 30-year sentence from a 1992 felony murder conviction, in connection with the fatal shooting of 48-year-old Nelson Batista. According to an affidavit, the incident began when Ortiz allegedly followed Batista’s SUV down a side street after a dispute on Park Avenue. Surveillance footage captured Ortiz slapping the side of Batista’s car, prompting Batista to stop and exit. A scuffle ensued, during which Ortiz allegedly punched Batista and both men fell to the ground, struggling for control of a handgun. ShotSpotter technology recorded at least two gunshots, one of which proved fatal, striking Batista in the chest. Ortiz then allegedly struck the motionless Batista with the butt of the pistol before fleeing the scene. Community tips, including cellphone video from a witness and identification from others, led to Ortiz’s capture after a week-long manhunt. A detective also recognized Ortiz from prior encounters. At the time of Batista’s death, Ortiz was reportedly off parole. Batista, a father of six and grandfather of three, was an avid sports fan and had just laid his 25-year-old son to rest on October 3rd.
