An Iowa man, identified as 27-year-old Andrew Darrick Tanaka of West Des Moines, has been charged with four counts of attempted murder following a series of unprovoked shootings along Interstate 35. According to court documents, Tanaka allegedly opened fire on passing vehicles, striking a woman in the shoulder and firing shots into at least two other cars. Following his arrest, which was captured on video showing him surrendering to police, Tanaka made a disturbing statement to law enforcement: “I had to kill people today.” The incident began when Tanaka, driving a black Chevrolet Equinox, allegedly targeted a Subaru Outback after being passed by a BMW, firing at least two rounds and hitting the Subaru’s driver. He then reportedly pursued the BMW, firing another shot, before rear-ending a Nissan Altima. When the occupants of the Altima stopped to check on him, Tanaka allegedly emerged with a handgun and fired into their windshield. Authorities responded to multiple 911 calls, found the wounded woman, and eventually apprehended Tanaka with his handgun still in his possession on the highway shoulder. The interstate was shut down for hours as investigators processed the scene, and Tanaka was booked into Warren County Jail.
