Parents of slain pregnant mom demand husband’s return from Italy for murder trial

The parents of Christa Bauer Gilley, a pregnant Texas mother murdered in October 2024, are publicly pleading for her husband, Lee Gilley, to be extradited from Italy to face justice, emphasizing their belief in the sanctity of human life and their opposition to the death penalty. Lee Gilley, accused of killing his wife, fled to Italy after cutting off his ankle monitor, a move his attorney admits complicates the case by potentially being used as evidence of guilt. Italian courts have hesitated to extradite him due to concerns he might face capital punishment, which is abolished in Italy. However, Christa’s parents, Ed and Sharon Bauer, have stated in an op-ed that their faith guides them to believe justice for Christa does not involve taking another life, but rather confronting global violence against women. While Texas prosecutors have removed the death penalty from consideration to facilitate extradition, Gilley’s legal battle continues in Italy, with a preliminary hearing scheduled in the U.S. even as his extradition remains undecided. His defense maintains his innocence, claiming Christa died from a pre-existing medical condition, but the Bauer family remains resolute in their demand for accountability and justice for their daughter and grandchild.
