Carrie Ann Inaba Breaks Silence on DWTS Lift Controversy and Val Chmerkovskiy Suspension

Carrie Ann Inaba has addressed the recent controversies surrounding lifts and Val Chmerkovskiy’s suspension on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ via a candid Instagram post. Inaba clarified her interactions with Jenna Johnson following a critique of her lifts, stating, “I think it’s important for everyone to know that Jenna and I hugged it out after the Super Bowl show. Jenna was an absolute professional about it, and two women worked through the moment.” She further explained her perspective on the lift rule, acknowledging fan criticism that she inconsistently applies it, and suggested a collaborative approach for future seasons: “I think in the future, a new lift rule should be created for next season. I think a session of with all the dancers and the judges in a room together to discuss the history of how and why Len Goodman, our original producers and I defined the lift rule and the what the purpose is which is safety and fairness.” Inaba emphasized the show’s evolution and the need for better understanding between dancers, judges, and the audience. The controversy escalated when Val Chmerkovskiy was suspended for an inappropriate social media post, perceived as a reference to Will Smith’s Oscars slap, which he later apologized for, explaining his instinct was to defend his wife, Jenna Johnson, after Inaba’s critique.
