A breathtaking family vacation in Italy’s stunning Dolomites turned to tragedy when Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva, a 36-year-old marketing professional from Miami, fell approximately 1,000 feet to her death on October 17th. While hiking near the 9,000-foot Forcella Pordoi pass, Rubio Leiva reportedly stepped off the marked trail to capture an ideal photograph, according to Italian media reports. She lost her footing at an exposed point and plunged down the steep mountainside in full view of her sister. Emergency services were alerted, and despite a swift rescue operation involving an air ambulance and mountain rescuers, a doctor pronounced her dead at the scene. Her body was later retrieved by helicopter. This incident occurs amidst growing concerns about ‘selfie tourism’ in the Dolomites, a UNESCO-protected mountain range, where iconic locations like Tre Cime di Lavaredo are overwhelmed by crowds more interested in photos than the natural beauty, sparking online backlash.
