Senator Slams Mayor for ‘Lighting on Fire’ Taxpayer Dollars on Foreign Worker Program

Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) has sharply criticized Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther for a recent memorandum of understanding with Ghana that allocates $225,000 in public funds towards a joint nursing program, a move Moreno argues is a reckless waste of taxpayer money that should be invested in the domestic workforce. Moreno contends that this $225,000 is merely a fraction of the approximately $8.3 million in public funds the mayor has allegedly spent to benefit noncitizens and foreign governments since taking office. The agreement, aimed at strengthening nursing education and creating legal pathways for Ghanaian nurses to join Ohio’s healthcare workforce, has drawn fire from conservatives who believe American citizens should be prioritized for such opportunities, especially given concerns about potential wage depression for American nurses and past incidents involving foreign nationals accused of significant fraud within the healthcare system. Moreno is urging the mayor to reallocate these funds to expand enrollment and training capacity at Ohio’s colleges and universities, thereby creating high-earning job opportunities for local youth and improving patient care within the state, rather than subsidizing foreign recruitment programs.
