Bethesda’s “Golden Goose” Mentality Kept Elder Scrolls From a Fallout: New Vegas-Style Spin-Off

Despite the decade-plus wait between Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda Game Studios reportedly never explored the possibility of an external studio developing a spin-off in the vein of Fallout: New Vegas. This decision, according to a Skyrim loremaster, stems from Bethesda’s deeply ingrained protective nature over its flagship fantasy franchise, a stark contrast to its approach with the Fallout series, which saw Obsidian Entertainment deliver the critically acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas. The implication is that Bethesda views The Elder Scrolls as too precious to entrust to outside developers, preferring to keep its creation entirely in-house, thereby potentially prolonging the wait for new installments and preventing the kind of fan-favorite spin-offs that have enriched other Bethesda IPs.
