Retired LAPD Detective Claims Scott Peterson Deserves New Trial, Citing Overlooked Witnesses

A retired LAPD detective has come forward, asserting that Scott Peterson, convicted nearly 22 years ago for the murder of his pregnant wife Laci, deserves a new trial due to critical witnesses and potential evidence that she claims were overlooked by investigators. Ninette Toosbuy, featured in the new A&E docuseries “Scott Peterson: The New Evidence,” argues that basic missing person protocols were not followed, specifically regarding numerous reported sightings of Laci Peterson on the morning of December 24, 2002, after Scott Peterson claims he had already left for a fishing trip. Toosbuy contends that if investigators had thoroughly pursued these leads, which identified about 15 individuals who claimed to have seen Laci walking her dog, it could have potentially excluded Peterson as a suspect early on. The docuseries also highlights the uninvestigated burglary across the street from the Peterson home on the same morning and a burned van found nearby with possible bloodstains, suggesting alternative theories that were allegedly dismissed. While Laci Peterson’s mother, Sharon Rocha, dismisses these claims as “no new evidence,” Peterson’s legal team, the Los Angeles Innocence Project, believes these overlooked aspects, including potentially insufficient DNA testing on evidence from the burned van and discrepancies in hydrodynamic modeling regarding where Laci’s body may have entered the water, warrant a new trial, despite a judge’s recent denial of his petition to overturn the conviction.
