Francesca Hong, a socialist-backed frontrunner for the Wisconsin gubernatorial nomination, is facing significant online criticism after resurfaced posts revealed her past calls to ‘Cancel Thanksgiving’ and an account of experiencing an anxiety attack around ‘old white people’ at a Culver’s. In a now-deleted 2020 post on X, Hong wrote, ‘Cancel Thanksgiving. Should have done this in 1621… If it takes a worldwide pandemic for us to realize we should stop celebrating colonialism and the original superspreader event that killed indigenous folx [sic] and women, so be it,’ sparking mockery for her use of ‘folx’ and her stance on the holiday. Adding to the controversy, a 2019 post surfaced where Hong described wanting to leave a Culver’s due to ‘anxiety attack… to (sic) many old white people who didn’t think we spoke english,’ a sentiment that drew sharp criticism from conservative observers who questioned her electability in Wisconsin. These remarks come as Hong gains momentum in the race following the abrupt withdrawal of former frontrunner Mandela Barnes, who exited amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of workplace sexual misconduct. With Barnes’ departure, Hong and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley are now the leading contenders, with Hong having secured endorsements from national progressives like Reps. Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna, while Crowley has the backing of Gov. Tony Evers and local organizations.
