A 75-year-old West Virginia woman, Margaret Rog, faces charges of abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult after allegedly leaving her 76-year-old husband, who suffers from dementia, Alzheimer’s, and legal blindness, unattended on the toilet for a staggering 19 hours. According to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred last month when her husband went to the bathroom around 3 p.m. and Rog was unable to assist him off the toilet. Instead of seeking help, investigators claim Rog left him without food, water, or his prescribed medications for the entire night, reportedly hearing him groan in pain but choosing to go to bed. It wasn’t until approximately 10 a.m. the next day, when a speech therapist arrived for a scheduled visit, that the man was found unresponsive and in critical condition. He was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with severe conditions including heart failure, respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism, hypernatremia, sepsis, and rhabdomyolysis, along with wounds on his backside and shortness of breath. He ultimately died on August 31, with investigators stating that his condition and injuries sustained from being left on the toilet were significant contributing factors to his death. Rog allegedly made self-incriminating statements to authorities and family members, admitting awareness of her husband’s need for assistance and her deliberate inaction. She has pleaded not guilty and posted a $75,000 bond.
