Authorities in Colorado have confirmed the tragic discovery of a Denver man’s body at the bottom of Gunnison National Park’s Black Canyon, a treacherous area known for its sheer 2,000-foot drop-offs and limited inner canyon access. The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office initiated a search after an abandoned vehicle and personal belongings were found near the South Rim, prompting the deployment of a drone team. Despite initial challenges due to diminishing daylight, the drone team later confirmed the presence of human remains on the canyon floor. The deceased hiker has been identified as 57-year-old John N. Countryman of Denver. His body was recovered and transferred to the coroner’s office, with the cause and manner of death currently under investigation. The rugged terrain of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park significantly complicates search and rescue efforts in such incidents.
