Batarti Gabbard, the 55-year-old brother of former presidential candidate and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, faces charges of second-degree custodial interference following an alleged incident on July 12 where he reportedly attempted to lure several children, including a 9-year-old boy, to his Waikīkī hotel room by offering them gum and money. Police state that Gabbard approached the children at a hotel pool, asked for their names, and wrote them down in a notebook before making his offers, but the children refused and he left the scene. The incident was reported to the police by a 42-year-old woman. While declining to comment on the specific allegations, Gabbard’s father, Hawaii state Sen. Mike Gabbard, confirmed that his son is continuing to receive psychiatric treatment and expressed love for him, asking for prayers for his recovery. This charge comes after Batarti Gabbard was also arrested on July 16 for theft, a charge to which he pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a court date, while no court date has yet been set for the custodial interference charge. Honolulu police have confirmed that Batarti Gabbard is no longer in custody.
