In a chilling revelation that has sent shockwaves through South Carolina, a mother, Justine Marie May, 31, has been charged with two counts of homicide by child abuse after her two young daughters were discovered deceased in their Ladson home. Responding to a welfare check on September 29th, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputies found May outside the residence in a state of distress, reportedly speaking incoherently. Upon entering the home, deputies made the tragic discovery of the children, aged approximately 1½ and 2½ years old. According to court affidavits, May confessed to investigators that the preceding two weeks had been a ‘blur’ and she could not recall the last time she had provided her daughters with food or drink. She allegedly admitted that the children may have died from starvation and acknowledged her neglect as a contributing factor. May was the sole caregiver for the children during this period. Investigators noted that deputies had made multiple prior contacts with May and the children in August and September, with the last documented visit occurring on September 20th, and reported no immediate signs of concern during those encounters. An internal review of the sheriff’s office’s response is underway, with state agencies also assisting in the ongoing investigation into this profound tragedy.
