Son’s Outcry: Canada’s Assisted Death Program ‘Way Past Appropriate’ After Father’s Rapid MAiD Procedure

The swift progression of his father’s medically assisted death (MAiD) in Canada has left Eric Edmeades deeply concerned, prompting him to warn that the system has become ‘way past appropriate.’ What began as a discussion in late 2023 about his father Baz, who was in his late 70s and facing a combination of health issues including epilepsy and neurological pain, escalated unexpectedly. Edmeades initially believed the MAiD process would take at least six months, allowing ample time for preparation and visits. However, the timeline dramatically accelerated, with his father’s death occurring on February 27, 2024, leaving the family with little notice. Edmeades expressed gratitude for incidentally booking a trip to Vancouver, allowing him and his wife to spend time with his father before the procedure, though he had anticipated further opportunities. He now questions the adequacy of safeguards within Canada’s MAiD program, particularly given the rapid timeline and his father’s declining health, which he partly attributes to the isolation of COVID-era lockdowns. While acknowledging potential circumstances for MAiD, Edmeades fears a ‘slippery slope,’ advocating for an independent approval process insulated from government influence and potential financial incentives. The Department of Justice Canada, through spokesperson Ian McLeod, maintains that Canadian law requires voluntary requests, freedom from external pressure, and informed consent, with stringent criteria and safeguards, and that criminal offenses occur for non-compliance. McLeod clarified that while mental illness alone does not qualify for MAiD, it can be a contributing factor to suffering, and that waiting periods between assessments can be shortened under specific imminent risk conditions. He noted that federal requirements are minimums, with provinces and territories overseeing MAiD administration and potentially adding further protections.
