When your manual transmission car’s battery dies and you’re stranded without a jump-start, a classic technique can bring it back to life: the push-start. First, ensure the ignition is turned to the ‘on’ position. Then, shift into second gear, as this provides the optimal ratio for rolling. With the clutch pedal fully depressed, start pushing the car, or have a willing helper push. As you gain a decent amount of speed, smoothly and quickly release the clutch pedal. The sudden engagement of the transmission with the rolling wheels will force the engine’s crankshaft to spin, mimicking the action of the starter motor.
