The tribute, which also included Usher, was presented as a celebration of Black joy and artistry, but ignited immediate backlash from political commentators, activists, and the public alike. Critics, including investigative reporter Andrew Kerr and Democratic activist Shannon Watts, pointed to Brown’s 2009 felony assault conviction for brutally beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna, as well as subsequent allegations of violence, assault, and restraining orders from other ex-partners, and even a recent assault charge involving a producer. Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross highlighted the particular insensitivity of honoring an abuser when Black women experience domestic violence at disproportionately high rates, calling Crockett’s action “ridiculous” and “tone deaf as hell.” Author Don Winslow expressed his disgust, stating the incident changed his view of Crockett and that he would never support her again. Even Chris Brown himself reacted, posting on Instagram that he was put on the spot and wished he had been left alone, noting he had not sought the honor.
