Manhattan prosecutors have formally asked a judge to refute claims made by Luigi Mangione’s defense team regarding media access to his upcoming murder trial, asserting that the defense’s allegations of the District Attorney’s Office influencing reporter selection are baseless and an attempt to spread misinformation. In a letter to Judge Gregory Carro, Senior Trial Counsel Joel J. Seidemann stated that the DA’s office “had no role” in developing the New York State Office of Court Administration’s media access plan or in selecting journalists, directly contradicting the defense’s assertions that the court’s plan violates Mangione’s constitutional right to a public trial and that the DA’s office was involved in “hand-picking” the press. The defense attorneys had argued that media restrictions, including limits on jury selection coverage and the perceived exclusive access granted to a select group of reporters, amounted to an unconstitutional closure of the proceedings. Prosecutors are urging the court to remind Mangione’s attorneys of their ethical obligations not to knowingly make false statements to the court or third parties, citing New York’s Rules of Professional Conduct, and have emphasized that the defense’s accusations are an attempt to delegitimize the trial proceedings. Mangione faces murder and terrorism-related charges in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
