Ohio’s most popular Republican, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who secured a commanding victory in his race for State Auditor, has issued a stark warning to his party following the midterm elections: the GOP must pivot from simply opposing Democratic agendas to actively articulating what it stands for. LaRose, who garnered over 2.3 million votes, more than any other statewide Republican candidate, emphasized that while Democrats champion “crazy ideas that are dangerous,” the Republican party’s focus should be on fundamental tenets like human freedom, endowed rights, and the prosperity offered by free market principles. He pointed to the overwhelming success of Ohio Issue 3, a voter ID requirement that passed with over 65% of the vote, as evidence that core conservative policies remain popular even when candidates falter in their messaging. LaRose suggested that even many Ohio Democrats are “common sense people” who would support such measures, contrasting them with a more “woke DEI cuckoo wing” found on the coasts. He urged the victorious Democrats in Ohio to govern with “common sense” and avoid adopting coastal liberal policies, warning that failure to do so could lead to short tenures in office. Despite a challenging night for many Republican candidates, LaRose acknowledged the professionalism of Ohio’s 40,000 election workers and expressed his commitment, in his new role as State Auditor, to hold politicians accountable for their spending.
