In a remarkable display of resilience, NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes, who was brutally stabbed seven times during an off-duty robbery attempt in the Bronx, has been released from Jacobi Medical Center. The detective was targeted by two suspects on an e-bike who attempted to steal his gold chain as he unloaded his car. Despite sustaining multiple stab and slash wounds, Detective Mercedes bravely fought back and then pursued his attackers on foot for two blocks before collapsing. Hundreds of NYPD officers and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch were present to witness his triumphant departure from the hospital, where he stood and walked out on his own. “The entire department stands behind Detective Mercedes as he continues his recovery. And the greatest detectives in the world will relentlessly pursue those responsible for this crime,” stated Commissioner Tisch, emphasizing the department’s commitment to apprehending the assailants who remain at large.
