Netanyahu Alleges ‘Stolen Election’ Amid Record Arab Party Gains

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Israel’s Arab parties of orchestrating an ‘election theft,’ alleging widespread criminal activity including bribery, threats, and the use of illegal software to manipulate results, as preliminary projections show these parties securing a record 19 seats in the Knesset. This surge in support places the Arab parties in a kingmaker position, as neither Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc nor the opposition’s centrist bloc is projected to secure the 61 seats needed for a parliamentary majority. Netanyahu’s accusations, shared on X, claim that Arab parties supporting ‘terrorism and the elimination of the Jewish state’ have undermined the election’s integrity, prompting the Likud party to submit hundreds of pieces of evidence to authorities. The Joint List alliance is expected to win 12 seats, while the United Arab List (Ra’am) is projected to take seven. This unprecedented political leverage for Arab parties, who represent about 21% of Israel’s population and voted at a near-record high of 75-80%, challenges historical trends where Arab parties primarily served in opposition. While the Joint List is unlikely to join a coalition, Ra’am has previously demonstrated a willingness to work within the existing political framework, seeking concessions for improved Arab citizen welfare, a strategy that could see them invited into a government, as they were in 2021. The situation is further complicated by past attempts to disqualify these parties from elections, which were overturned by the Supreme Court, highlighting the delicate balance between Israel’s democratic principles and the political aspirations of its Arab minority.
