A harrowing ordeal in the extreme environment of Death Valley National Park ended in tragedy this month when 68-year-old French tourist Pierre Michel Formosa died after his vehicle became stranded on West Side Road. Formosa and his companion, also French nationals, found themselves stuck in mud on August 17th, with no other vehicles in sight. In a desperate attempt to find help, the two men began walking across the blistering salt flats towards Badwater Road, where temperatures soared to a deadly 116°F. Tragically, Formosa was unable to continue the arduous trek and succumbed to the brutal conditions. His companion, however, managed to reach Badwater Road and was eventually assisted by a passing motorist, who then alerted park officials. A swift search and rescue operation was launched by National Park Service rangers and the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, with a California Highway Patrol helicopter joining the effort. Formosa’s body was discovered later that afternoon, approximately 1.5 miles from Badwater Road, and pronounced dead at the scene. This incident serves as a stark and heartbreaking reminder of the severe dangers posed by Death Valley’s intense heat, vast distances, and remote terrain, emphasizing that these risks are present regardless of a visitor’s experience.
