As the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks approaches, the family of FDNY hero Stephen Siller will honor his ultimate sacrifice by recreating his courageous final journey through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. Frank Siller and other family members will lead a private walk through the tunnel, retracing the steps Stephen took on that fateful morning in 2001. After being alerted to the World Trade Center attack, off-duty firefighter Stephen Siller, unable to drive through the tunnel due to security closures, strapped on 60 pounds of gear and ran on foot through the tunnel to reach the towers, where he tragically lost his life while saving others. This poignant event marks the conclusion of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s “Steel Across America” tour, which has traversed the nation since May, carrying a 21-foot steel beam from the South Tower and sharing Stephen’s inspiring story. The Foundation, founded on Stephen’s belief that “While we have time, let us do good,” has since provided over 1,700 mortgage-free homes to families of fallen service members and first responders, as well as to disabled veterans and first responders, and has extended housing assistance to over 20,000 homeless veterans. The “343 Homes Initiative,” launched this year to commemorate the 343 New York firefighters lost on 9/11, aims to provide an additional 343 mortgage-free homes to families of fallen heroes and catastrophically injured service members, further cementing the enduring legacy of those who gave everything.
