What would need to change?” This is not the first time El-Sayed has voiced criticism of the sport; earlier this month, he released a video highlighting concerns about the escalating cost of attending NFL games, suggesting that the sport, which should unite people, is instead creating division based on socioeconomic status, especially given that many stadiums are taxpayer-subsidized. His past writings also point to a deep critique, with a 2021 post stating that “the toxic masculinity at the heart of America’s most popular sport — and men’s sports culture more generally — is way deeper than a few emails or a Jay-Z turnaround.” These comments come from a former high school football captain who once described sports as his “lifeline,” and who has also publicly defended masculinity and sought to appeal to male voters, even as he critiques the cultural elements of sports.
