The bodies of Kaden Matsuda, 19, and Jackson Donlon, 20, both students at Colorado Mountain College, were discovered in a remote mountain basin on West Apostle Mountain after they went missing during a hike near Ice Mountain. The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the grim find on Wednesday, days after the students were reported missing by the college on Monday. A massive search and rescue operation involving over 60 volunteers from six counties braved difficult terrain and worsening weather conditions in a desperate attempt to locate the young men. While foul play is not suspected, their remains were found near one another, and an investigation into the cause of their deaths, which have been sent for autopsy, is ongoing. Sheriff Andy Rohrich expressed his condolences to the families, highlighting the team’s efforts to find Matsuda and Donlon before an impending storm, offering a measure of closure amidst the tragedy.
