Celebrity Cruises Faces Backlash Over Sudden Daily Gratuity Hike

Passengers aboard Celebrity Cruises are expressing significant dissatisfaction and outrage following a surprise increase in daily automatic gratuities, which took effect on July 29th with minimal advance notice. The cruise line has raised daily gratuity charges by $1.50 per person across all stateroom categories, now ranging from $19.50 to $24.50 per person, per day, depending on the accommodation. This sudden change caught many travelers off guard, with some complaining they were notified on the very day the new rates became active, preventing them from prepaying at the old, lower rate. Many passengers feel the cruise line should integrate gratuities into the base fare, similar to luxury lines, rather than imposing these unexpected charges. In protest, a growing number of guests are vowing to opt out of the automatic gratuity system and instead distribute cash tips directly to crew members, aiming to ensure their money reaches the staff who provide exceptional service. While some passengers acknowledge the value of crew contributions and don’t mind the increase itself, the lack of transparent communication and the abrupt implementation have severely damaged the customer experience, leading to threats of boycotting the automatic tipping system.
